Holidays can be a frustratingly passive season, with so many rituals and social norms that have to be upheld. It seems like I’m constantly giving out chocolates, socks and other such gifts to absent friends and distant relatives, when all I really want to do is give them a really hard kick in the head. The cure for rage such as this is a good solid action game so, if you’re as pent up and aggressive as myself, here are the games that will be your lifelines over the course of 2012.

Overstrike

Made by Insomniac games, those clever chaps behind the Ratchet and Resistance series, you just know this game is going to be one to look out for. Though we don’t know much about the gameplay yet, you can bet that the weapons will be awesome based on Insomniac’s history. With their Playstation exclusivity now up, Insomniac will be bringing the pseudo-spy game craziness of Overstrike to a wide audience next year.

Max Payne 3

Many things in this world are subjective, but one undeniable fact remains in the face of it all: Slow motion is really awesome. This was what really gave Max Payne its X factor when the series began in 2001 and, though it isn’t as original a concept nowadays, you just know that Max Payne 3 will deliver a similar sense of gun-toting satisfaction when it launches in March.

God of War 4

Though the original God of War trilogy came to an end with God of War 3 in 2010, we all know that the overarching series has yet to run out of steam. Recent job ads and the usual rumour mill have been spreading the idea of a God of War 4 set for 2012 and, should these rumours prove to be true, we’re sure to be in for the same roller-coaster ride that the series has offered us before.
