After many, many months, Portkey Games and WB Games Avalanche have finally unveiled gameplay for Hogwarts Legacy. It’s an open world action RPG set in the 1800s with the player joining Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as a fifth year student. Given how Harry Potter’s tale played out, it’s easy to assume that players can potentially co-op together.

However, in a new PlayStation Blog post, community manager Chandler Wood clarified that Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player title. “While you can have NPC companions join you on your adventures, the story is about your own legacy.”

The main antagonists are Ranrok and a dark wizard named Victor Rookwood. The former hates wizards and in addition to allying with Rookwood, he leads a goblin rebellion to further his goals. It’s the player’s job to prevent some recently discover ancient magic from falling into his hands (though the fate of the wizarding world is entirely up to you).

Characters like Professor Eleazar Fig will serve as a friend and mentor but other students and” can be expected. It’s even teased that players will encounter “a Weasley or two.” Regardless, whether one is looking for a more skill-based experience or simply in it for the story, there will be a “range” of difficulty options “to meet various skill levels, enabling players to experience the game in a way most enjoyable to them.”

Hogwarts Legacy is out in Holiday 2022 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Xbox One, PS4 and PC. For more details on the development, check out this behind-the-scenes video. You can also check out some new screenshots below.
