In the Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary Special livestream, series creator Yuji Horii confirmed what everyone expected – a new mainline Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate is currently in development and planned for a simultaneous worldwide release. Check out the brief teaser trailer below.

Of course, no release date or platforms were announced. It was confirmed that the battle system would be changing though in what way is yet to be revealed. The last mainline title in the series was Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age which released in 2017 for Japan on the Nintendo 3DS and PS4 before its worldwide release for PC and PS4 in 2018.

The real question is whether Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate would be coming to PS4 at all. Production is only continuing for the PS4 Slim 500 GB “Jet Black” edition in Japan while all other models have been discontinued and the PS5 takes precedence. Granted, the PS4 still has a fairly large audience, both Japan and worldwide, so it seems a given but time will tell. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
