Astro Bot 2 Would Have to be “Something Fresh,” Director Says

"We don't to be just doing the same thing," says Astro Bot director and Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet.

Launching last week, Astro Bot has got off to a stellar start, enjoying universal critical acclaim and, by the looks of it, commercial success to match. Of course, with the game just barely a few weeks old, it’s nowhere close to the time for conversations about a potential sequel- but given the success that the platformer is enjoying, it’s only natural to wonder what developer Team Asobi has in mind for the future of the IP.

Speaking in a recent interview on YouTuber SkillUp’s Friends Per Second podcast, when asked about the future of Astro, Astro Bot director and Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet briefly explained that anything that the studio does going forward would “have to be something fresh”, rather than something that’s just more of the same.

“Getting a character off the ground is really, really difficult, if you think about any IP,” he said. “The Astro IP is also very flexible, so we’ll continue kind of thinking about game ideas. It’d have to be something fresh. That’s also very important for us. We don’t to be just doing the same thing, [like Astro Bot] 1.5. So time will tell.”

Of course, in the here and now, Team Asobi will be taking a well-earned break, while the studio is currently also working on upcoming free DLC levels for Astro Bot– which, incidentally, could include cameo appearances from the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Stellar Blade, and Rayman, among others

Astro Bot is available on PS5. Read our review of the game through here.
