Alien: Isolation Passes 1 Million Copies Sold

It turned out to be successful after all.

The Creative Assembly’s excellent take on the beloved Alien movie franchise, Alien: Isolation, was an amazing and exceptional game that also took some bold risks with the conventions of the horror game formula; today, Sega announced that those risks have paid off, as the game has now sold 1 million copies worldwide.

In terms of the multi-million selling AAA game industry, where games like FIFA, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Watch Dogs, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Assassin’s Creed, and Destiny routinely sell into the tens of millions, that might not seem like much, but remember, Alien: Isolation had the unenviable task of following up to Aliens: Colonial Marines, a widely panned game that is considered to be among the worst ever made, and that definitely must have taken some wind out of its sails. Happily, it seems like the game’s quality was still enough to see it through to at least a modicum of commercial success.

“It has been fantastic to watch the reviews come in and read of the reactions of players, hidden in the bowels of Sevastopol Station, terrified to make the next move,” said Creative Lead, Alistair Hope. “We set out to make the Alien game we had always wanted to play, and from these figures it seems we also succeeded in making the Alien game another million wanted to play. We hope many more gamers enjoy Alien: Isolation in 2015.”

“Fox is enormously pleased with how both SEGA and Creative Assembly have realized their homage to Ridley Scott’s iconic film Alien,” said Michael Doyle, vice president of interactive games for Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products. “The project represents a paradigm shift in what is possible in the arena of licensed games.”

Hopefully, this is the start of us getting some good Alien games, rather than just being an aberrant one off.
