With today’s digital age of media, from streaming and movies to games, video game discs aren’t quite what they used to be. Even though the rich culture of discs, their instruction manuals and whatnot are winding down, the technology is still as important as ever for current and next gen consoles. Let’s take a look at 15 facts about video game discs to outline why.

The First CD-ROM Console

When you think about disc-based consoles and their rise, Sony’s PlayStation One obviously comes to mind. The console did an incredible job of popularizing the media and pushed the boundaries of console gaming as a result. However, it’s far from the first console to actually implement a CD disc format. That honour goes to the PC Engine Duo which released in September 1991 for Japan and later as the TurboDuo in October 1992 for North America.
